CPU Upgrade Under NT Workstation 4.0

By dsink ·
I have a workstation running NT Workstation 4.0. I upgraded the CPU from a Celeron 366 to a P3 667. I set the jumpers for the motherboard to except the new chip and when I booted it saw it correctly. However when NT started to boot I received this error message.. Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\System32\Config\SystemHardware Profile/Last Known Good menu. If anyone has any idea I would appreciate it. Thanks David

CPU Upgrade Under NT Workstation 4.0

The Hal is different since you upgrade the cpu.
win9x and w2k will accept those kinds of changes and change their configuration accordingly, nt4 wont.
You will have to reinstall nt4 or upgrade to w2k.

I found a couple of references on TechNet about this error. Basically, the problem is with the new processor and the HKLM Registry hive.
The only 2 solutions to this are:
"The only resolution is to use an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), or perform a reinstallation of Windows NT."

Or, you could put your old processor back in (if an option).

Place your OLD cpu boot and make an emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
Change cpu again and boot from the Windows NT cd rom instalation. Perform a Windows Repair using the erd.
It works!
Hope it helps!!!
