Cpu usage 100%

Hp Pavilion 8835
Running xp pro
cpu 766mhz
256mb ram

In the task manager the svchost process is hogging the cpu 97%

The system has just been reloaded.

There are two probable causes, virus that must be removed or service(s) that needs to be disabled or finished.

1. Run antivirus.

2. Note the PID of the svchost.exe that?s taking the most CPU. Run ?tasklist /svc? without the quotes from the Command Prompt (Start > Run and type cmd). This will list corresponding services running with all the processes including svchost.exe. Refer to the services(s) of the svchost.exe with the above PID.

If the PID column is not listed on the Windows Task Manager, click on View menu, Select columns, and check on the PID box.

Windows Task Manager is okay, but use these to see more info on what processors are using the most resources and you can look up those files.

Try to uninstall your antivirus program and reinstall it again after a restart. I have found this to be my solution, I use Norton Corporate v10.
