Sure add TASKMAN.EXE to the Startup Folder.

I opened task manager, clicked FILE & NEW & ADD FILE added Tasman.exe and the icon appeared but it was not showing actual CPU usage and when I clicked on it, it disappeared. Perhaps it needs a registry entry? By the way, I tear my hair out when I click on an icon in win explorer and it gives me the DOS prompt. Can I move OPEN further up the list?

Hey There,

I too wanted to keep that useful little taskbar icon. I came up with a really simply way to do this.

First, open Task Manager by right-clicking on your taskbar and selecting Task Manager.

In Task Manager, go to Options>Hide When Minimized. This will make keep the CPU usage icon in your system tray, but will hide the Task Manager otherwise when you minimize it.

Next, (assuming you have Windows XP SP2, I created a shortcut to C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe. In the shortcut properties, I set it to run Minimized by default.

Finally, I just placed the shortcut in the Startup folder on the Start menu.

Now, whenever I start my computer, Task Manager is running and I see the CPU icon in my System Tray.

Let me know if you have any questions.
