    Crashed PDC

    Locked

    by johandevil ·

My Primary Domain Controller’s Hard Drive Crashed leaving me with only my Backup Domain Controller in place. I left the Backup Controller as is, not upgrading to PDC for now. How do I go to work to reinstate the PDC into the domain, after I’ve installed 2000 server again?

There is no such thing as a Backup Domain Controller in Windows 2000 and better.

When you use Active Directory Users and Computers which DC is holding the PDC Emulator FSMO role?

Just restore the system state and you should be done. Did this server have any services other thasn being a DC?

If you have a backup, reinstall Windows 2000 and the restore the System State to restore your first DC server.

If you have no backup, then you need to put the 5 FSMO roles on to the 2nd DC server and then reinstall Windows on first server and run DCPromo to install the DC and replicate the info from 2nd server.

Thanks, took a while to figure out how to seize the fsmo roles from the crashed dc, but the answer sent me on the right trail.
