Why would anyone want to use a USB connection when the modern wireless remote control does the job so well? Maybe I do not understand your question but I just don’t see any need to do so.

I have seen economical remote controls for about $5 and I don’t want a wired cable attached to my remote. You might have had a point 40 – 50 years ago, but no longer with the modern wireless remote.

Seems the cost would be more than a replacement remote. Not to mention that smart TVs don’t have a unified USB control system.

However there is HDMI CEC. “Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is a feature of HDMI designed to allow users to command and control devices connected through HDMI by using only one remote.”

This is where we can buy a Fire TV stick, plug that into the HDMI CEC port and do all the usual TV controls via the Fire TV remote. If you like ROKU better be sure to get the model with the Volume controls on the remote.

How do I know this? Helped my neighbor with same issue of a missing remote. The Roku with the volume controls fixed it as we couldn’t figure out the TV’s make and model. Weird TV.
