Server AD 2008 for home?

I wouldn't use it! Give each kid certain access such as a non adimistrator. AD isn't made for just 3 folks.

AD a bit to much for home environment?

You can set up AD but as the previous poster mentioned AD does not really make sense for 3 users. So many variables that can be configured or miss configured. A straight forward share with proper permissions and parental control if it is in example for kids.
If you do want to set up AD then here is in addition to the other mentioned links a easy to follow "GENERAL" instruction.
