Create consecutive files easily

In your application development, have you needed to create consecutive files? Will the information contained the Nov. 6 C++ TechMail tip, "Create consecutive files easily," help you in that regard?

I've found the article interesting since I've just done something similar in perl, except I had a constraint on the file naming convention which limited my numbers. I will submit this some time in the future.

I like the access function, as I would of went a more complicated route to find if a file exists, and the note that the include file would be else where.

I was particularly interesting in the algorthym used to find the next number in taking in to consideration for its "surroundings". I would like more explanation and some analysis details.

STL components where not compatible on other platforms. I had to do some typedefs to be able to use this code on WIN32, gnu, and Unix platforms, since everyone likes there own way of deploying the STL...but conceptually it all fell in place...
