Create quick notes with WordPad

In today’s Windows XP Tips it said to open WordPad, write a message and drag to desktop. I did this, but when i double clicked the icon, it asked me what I wanted to use to open——i clicked WordPad, but all I got was a page of gobblygook–circles, squares etc. Any ideas why?
