Creating a RAID 5 and moving it.

By total geek ·
Hi,

Is it possible to create a RAID 5 on one Adaptec SCSI card and then move those hard drives to another Adaptec SCSI card and it will recognise that it is a RAID 5?

The Adaptec SCSI cards are not identical.

Just thought I would ask.

Thanks

Mil

Well Yes & No while you can create a RAID 5 array on one RAID controller when you move it you will have to setup the RAID array again as the controller card needs to be programed as to how it is going to be working.

IF both Cards Support RAID 5 then it should be possible to move the array but really it is much simpler to just set up the array on the unit that it is going to be used on. The previous only applies to a Data Array as if there is an OS involved in the setup you'll need to install all the proper drivers again so it is easier to do a clean install and setup the array as you go along.

But if you are moving a RAID Data array from an old unit to a new server it should be possible but make sure that you have all your backups up to date before you even attempt the move.

if your operating systems are not on these disks , yes you can ...operating system is also a factor . plus the file systems . in a unix/lunix system ( requiring that both adaptec cards support raid 5 )you configure and mount the disks with less risks .

Yes, it can be done, when you move the drives into the new unit and boot the server it is going to show a error in config. Pretty much it will be telling you that the config on the card does not match that on the drives. You will need to make sure you tell the card to copy the drive config so that you don't lose data. Lastly, Make sure you put the drives into the other storage device in the same order they were on the other one. It should work fine. I use to do that all the time with same DEll storage devices that we had.
