Creating a simple peer to peer network

By jtuckett ·
I have just started a netorking course. I would like to connect two P.C's (running Win 9. I have two Ethernet network cards, and cabling. I have no problem installing the cards, however actually configuring the network is a different matter! Please talk me through the stages of configuring the machines, protocols etc. Detailed replies would be much appreciated.

Creating a simple peer to peer network

To physically connect the two computers, your going to either need a hub, or make a crossover cable. Making the crossover cable is the cheapest method, but won't allow you to add another computer to your network later on if you want too. To make thecable you just need to flip the green and orange pairs on one end of the cable. To configure the cards, just have your driver disk ready for when Win98 detects the cards, assuming they are plug n play (they most likely are). Then you just need to add the protocols by right clicking the Network Neighborhood, going to properties, and clicking the Add button below where you see your Adapter. You need to add the following 3: TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and MS Client for File and Print sharing. After that, reboot both computers and you should be good to go. Hope this helps you out.

If you choose netbuei as your protocol all you have to do is give each computer a different name and the same workgroup. If you use tcpip you will have to assign each network card an ip number, use 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of255.255.255.0 for each of them. Then log onto the network with client for microsoft networks, turn file and print sharing on. and share at least one drive on each computer, even if it is a: Use the log on names and passwords of the computers as the permissions for the shares.
