Creating user accounts on XP MCE for use with domain

By james ·
We have several Media Center notebooks that need to access a file server.

I'm not sure how to create the accounts so that if I put a shortcut on the desktop and it asks for the login information it will take it.

Any one have any ideas?

Are the machines themselves members of the domain or are they non-domain computers with users who occasionally need to access domain resources? If so, I'd probably recommend setting up a VPN connection that users can log on to before accessing the server.

If the machines are on the domain, you just need to create user accounts in the domain for the users. They then log on to the machines using their domain user accounts. They should bnot have any problem doing this provided the appropriate permissions have been set on the file server

It may...

XP MCE can not be joined to a domain. So specifying credentials should work.

I forgot that MCE is pretty much just a beefed up version of XP Home and that it can't be joined to a domain. I feel dumb

Actually, it depends

on the version of MCE. Earlier versions could, and if upgraded from a machine joined to a domain, could use the domain just fine.

But most MCE systems cannot join a domain

I think it was MCE03 that could, and MCE05 that could not.
