Cross-Platform functionality

I have a client with 40 nodes connecting to a NT box. The nodes are using Office 97, Outlook 98 and Office 2000. Some of the clients are using Outlook Express as well. Their WAN connection is PacBell DSL in which they are utilizing the POP3 serverof PB. The client wants to have a calendar online that all clients can post to. For $$ reasons they want to keep this locally. They would also like to have inter-office messaging as well as pooling their contact information. What kind of scalable applications would be recommended for the online or intranet calendar as well as the inter-office messaging and contact info? Will Office 2000 as a uniform platform handle this? If so, can it be utilized with PacBell?s POP3 server? Note: in the future the client will have a second location in which communication between the offices will be needed. Scalability is key.
