Crossing the bridge…

I have run into a career snag and am looking for those who have walked the same road so that I might learn from your experiences.

I am currently a Network Administrator. I have climbed to the top of my available ladder (as with the 3 previous jobs). When I reach this point I become frustrated because my personality is goal oriented, not maintenance.

I have found that my core competancies are mentoring, training, analysis, and planning. I function extremely well in a consultant/analyst position. I have also come to see a waining of fulfillment in the IT sector.

“I need to steer the ship, not row it…”

This has been shown true in my previous position where many ideas and inputs I provided drove change and service improvement. Problem is, I was hitting the ceiling with no where to grow.

So, my question is, how do you make the change from IT to business? Due to my past work experience, my resume is very attractive to IT recruiters. Heck, I get called out of the blue for positions. But all these offers are for dead end IT Administration roles. I have sat in interviews with a captive audience. Yet, when my conversation switches from an IT focus to business, their eyes gloss over.

Anyone have any experience making this switch? If so, how did you manage to get others to focus on your business acumen and not your past successes?
