Cursor changes then system hangs

By 2000man ·
When I am on the comp. for awhile my cursor will change from an arrow to an hour glass or to a straight line with arrows on each end and even change colors. It is almost impossible to use the mouse at this point then the system slows down and locks up. I had this problem before and ended up reformatting and it has ran fine for about a month until now. I have a DFI k6bv3+/66 MB with a k62 500 processor 96 megs of ram and windows 98.

As per DFI's site, they do not really support the use of K6 2, or 3 cpu on these motherboards. However, you can, but you must check to see that your core votage jumper for the cpu is set to jump the " 2.0v " jumper. You should also look to see that the revision on your motherboard is " k6bv3+ rev b " as this will ensure a more stable platform. Also, this is sd ram 66mhz board. Make sure your running two 66mhz mem modules. Running pc100, or 133 could also cause the system to perform eratically.

When you first boot your computer, Right click on my computer. click on performance and it should be right around 80% (+ -). When the mouse pointer is getting ready to start flaking on you again, check the performance again. I'll bet it has jumped way down. I believe you have a program running on startup that is killing your performance. You may need to go into MSCONFIG from the start/run and uncheck all the non essentials that are running on startup. Good Luck! I'd be happy to explain in more detail if needed!

I came here looking for an answer to a similar problem. Except my curser just keeps hourglassing and it's buggy. Might be the mouse driver but I'm looking. Also I have Power desk and it keeps refreshing, from the same problem I think (but how would a mouse driver cause that?). I'm getting small Processor usage peaks and reading peaks. But no lock ups maybe because I have 384mB RAM.

After I posted that I was playing around with some settings. I was having trouble with the auto shutdown harddrive and/or hybernate options. I turned these off and my problem is gone give it a try.
