Installed a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520 into a friends computer. They are running WinXP Pro (although, I am getting all of those ‘non-genuine’ warnings….we’ll deal with that separately.
Anyway – first round, it would not boot up past the DOS round – black screen prior to starting WinXP.
Went into CMOS and enabled the option that should have sorted out the DMA/IRQ conflicts if any. Still didn’t work, so I reset the CMOS to the the optimized defaults. The machine then booted up, and automatically started the detection of PnP ethernet controllers, (also detected the wireless network). It appears as though WinXP could not find the ethernet controllers, and in addition, the computer started to freeze a couple minutes after windows started, regardless of whether the PnP detection was cancelled or permitted.
I suspect two things – ethernet card is overpowering the power supply, causing the hangups, or two, the non-genuine copy of Win XP is causing grief. It may also be that the default CMOS settings (both optimized and ‘fail-safe’) need to be tweaked.
Any thoughts before I tell them to take it in and let the shop wipe the machine and install a proper copy of windows along with the wireless adapter?
