    Damaged files on AppleShare 6.3

    Locked

    by jennifer_dwinell ·

We are running AppleShare 6.3 on the servers at one of the sites I do tech repair for. The server is a 7250 and is running OS 8.1.
The question is….. Students are creating files on an older machine(580)and saving their work to the appleshare server. When returning to a newer machine to retrieve their work (iMac)the files have been damaged.
What is the cause of this. Could collisions in the network? Could the packets be damaged while in transit to the server?…..I tried to recreate the problem by creating a slideshow on appleworks using a 580. I saved to a folder on the server, and then opened it up on an imac and it worked. What do you suggest to try next?

Network collision would not cause file damage using appleshare encapsulated in IP.

The packets could be damaged in transit, but that would affect all packets transmitted.

Recreating the process was a good first start.

Next, Try to collect ALL of the information about the problem. Could this be operator error? What’s the versioning between the apps?

Try this line of questioning to reach a solid foundation to begin troubleshooting. ‘

Look for issues surrounding the Users and groups datafile, Appleshare client versions on the LC580s, and any conflicts between them and the new stuff on the iMacs.

It was a conflict with the version
of appleshare. I updated the appleshare
on the old 580 machines and we have been
        running great !! Thank

Are you sure they’re damaged and just not opening properly on the newer system? I had a support call where older files (MacDraw) would not open after being transfered to a newer Mac. It turned out that the resolution of the monitor had to be set tosomething the MacDraw files could understand (800X600). Set at 1024 the files opened to a mess. Back at 800 all was well.
What are the apps involved? Is there an error message that comes up when you attempt to open the fie on the newer system?
