Dashboard Technology

By judith.westbrook ·
I want to offer dashboard technology to my manager but I've not worked with it before. I don't have a lot of funding to do this. I was wondering if there is a tested, low-cost product that could be used with an Access db. And, eventually with an Oracle db. Any ideas?

do a poc plus establish the need

You might do a proof-of-concept easily in Excel; keep the visuals simple yet effective; if you want, you can probably feed it from Access, even if you copy/paste at first. There are some types of "dashboards": strategic, analytic, operational. Work on identifying the purpose, what questions would it answer, how would it help prevent problems or enable proactive action? Do you need to define key metrics or performance indicators? How can you make it intelligent, and/or do you want it to be able to handle interactive user input? Does all the data you would need exist in systems where it is available to you, or would you need database work? If you identify the need, then the dashboard you want becomes one of the solutions, and maybe you can get it into the budget. Remember, the purpose is useful content; fancy graphics just make it more fun and hopefully easier to read. I use Xcelsius by SAP/BusinessObjects. It is an excellent tool. There are many good tools out there at various cost levels that you can evaluate based on the budget you have and the complexity of your requirements. Good luck.

Cognos also provides BI dashboard, but I stick to my recommendation you prototype it with Excel
