.DAT File Types extension changed to notepad icon. Help?

By sonap69 ·
Hi guys,
in Windows XP home edition my .DAT file types extensions have been changed to notepad file type extensions & icons. Is there anyway of fixing this so that the .DAT files are back into their original file type extensions & icons please?

Did you try to edit the file with notepad and forget to uncheck the "always use this program for this file type" check box??? I might be wrong about this but seeing that we are talking about .dat files then I don't think it will make a difference. The correct program will know which files it needs to open up.

Start "my computer" or "windows explorer".

Go to tools - folder options - file types

If dat is not in the list here, you can add it with the new button (it should be though if notepad is the default)

Highlight the dat entry and click restore.

Sorry house, I tried your advice but there is no restore option available anywhere in that window.

the "advanced" button becomes a "restore" button when you click on an extension that is not associated with it's default program.

if "dat" is not in the list, add it with the "new" button, if it does not already have the notepad symbol beside it, associate it with notepad using the "change" button and then click restore in the file types screen.

If you click on the dat file in this list, then you should see the advanced button flip to the restore button.

DAT files do not need a file association. If DAT is in the list of file types delete it.
