Data, but no music from USB cd-rom

    Locked

    by cybersea ·

A USB cd-rom supplies data but not music to a ThinkPad.
    1) Store bought audio CD
    2) Boot and program sounds heard OK
    3) WMP starts normally when cd inserted
    4) Speaker in systray – not muted
    5) Double-click speaker icon, nothing muted
    6) You can hear music playing if you plug a headset into the cd-rom port
    7) Audio enabled in BIOS
    8) Still no music when speakers plugged into TP

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

You may be in posession of a CD that was encoded so that it couldn’t be ripped to MP3 by your PC. In otherwords; it’s probably not meant to be played on a PC. To verify this do the following:
1)Try playing another CD in the USB CD-ROM
2)Try playing the new CD in another PC
3)If #2 didn’t work, try playing the CD in a regular CD player (Boombox etc.)
4)Bring the disk back to the store and then download the music from a Gnutella based server.

If the CD plays ok in another PC, then you have a different problem. Check the website of the manufacturer of the USB CD-ROM and see if they have any known support issues with the ThinkPad and look for updated drivers.

      I hope this helps.

Thanks for your excellent points. I did not know about the anti-ripping technology. I am trying to help someone in the Dominican Republic, so it will take a few days to implement your suggestions.

        Much appreciated,
        TG

The CD you are using is not protected, because audio comes out of the headphone port. The problem is either in the USB card/motherboard not being wired properly. If you look at the back of an internal CD-ROM drive there is one connection for data, and there is a seperate connector for audio to the sound card. I suspect that the USB port is not connected to the sound card.
