Data Cabling and Electrical Interference

By cfanning ·
I would be interested to hear from anyone that knows the standards for Keeping cabling (CAT5)at specific distances from Lighting, electric cables, electric motors, etc..
Are there specific distance to keep cable?
Does the electric Conduit preventinterference?
All information regrading this topic would be appreciated
Thanks
CF

Data Cabling and Electrical Interference

Part of your answer is really easy, and part is really difficult.

Cat5 cable must be seperated from any electrical wiring (120V and up) AND air conditioning plenums by a distance that varies depending on which version of the National Electric Code was in force when your building was constructed.

All cabling jackets are designed to protect only for the conductors designed voltage however I think all electronic cable resistance measurements are based on 120V MINIMUM???

The only "for sure" answer can come from your local building department! But three feet is always safe for anything below 1000 volts.

CONDUIT:
If the conduit is metal AND PROPERLY grounded AND there are no other cables in the conduit = Yes! Otherwise = No.

Data Cabling and Electrical Interference

Although the answer given is probably correct, because there are always variables, it didn?t help me with the problem at hand. The answer I got from a trusted wire vendor was more to the point. Standards say that if the wire is at least 8-12 inches from the electrical it should be suitable for use, and crossing the conduit is fine, as long as wire is run along the conduit.

Thanks
Chris
