Database data tranfer to another PC with same software

By PatriotPen ·
trying to help a friend to get the data base records he has on one computer to his other computer. He uses the same database software on both. One computer has winse and the other win XP. Wants to install win xp pro and I am afraid he will lose all his files, programs, etc as it will be a clean full version of xp pro. How can I transfer his data base records to his other computer into the database he has on it before I clean install xp pro?

This is hard to answer in fine detail without knowing the specific database program. However, they all have a tool that allows for the 'Export' of a database and another to 'Import' a database. So you can export from one and import to the other via any transfer method. If it is the same program you can usually just 'save' or copy the database to a floppy, CD or Flashdrive and then just open it on the other computer. If they are different versions then the export/import is best.

For future reference I suggest that your friend set up their hard drive as two partitions or two hard drives with the operating system on the first and the applications and data on the second, that way you dont have to worry about data transfer when rebuilding the operating system, just ahve to reload the software.

Depending on the program will determine the method.

You will have to do one of the following.

Backup/Restore

Export/Import

Export/Convert/Import

An email to the techsupport staff of the software, or access the FAQ's on their website, or provide us with the software name and version and we will try to help.
