Database Design Career Question

By rvoswald ·
I'm currently considering starting a career as a database designer serving
small to medium-sized not-for-profits, and I'd like to hear advice on
what database program I should focus on and what certification(s) I
should seek. Thanks for your time and guidance!

None or at least a selection

Waht you need to do is learn design and then learn how to implement your design. Different DBMS's will then force different compromises on you, never mind of course applications requirements for the contents.

Given your target market, Access, MySQL and SQL Server would be a good start.

A desktop for basic noddy type apps, MySQL for those who want beefier systems but don't want to cough up the licensing and software costs. SQL Server because most will have it.

Once you've picked the compromises that get forced on you by the target platfprm for them. Adding PostGre, Informix, Oracle, DB2 etc shouldn't cause that much of problem.
