A knowledge of both is a good idea

by marv732 In reply to Database (Sql or Oracle)

but it will require a lot of work to be able to understand the databases and how they work.
Oracle has a site where you can download any Oracle product and use it to improve your understanding. It has lots of tutorials and forums to help you out.
Microsoft also has sites which I'm sure will also help you to get an understanding of SQLServer.
Courses are best but very expensive either way you go.
Perhaps try the Express version of each along with some tutorials so you get a feel for both.
Good luck with it all.

Do some research into both to get a feel for the types of environment/organisations/applications they're deployed into. Take a look at the job market to see which would offer you the best future for your career.

Oracle Just Bought Sun

by cpubymike In reply to Database (Sql or Oracle)

If you are new to Data bases I would start with sqlite or postresql, both are in Ubuntu Repositories. Which has good Language support and if they don't Debian does in effect they are almost the same just Ubuntu is a little more refiened and Debian is allot more stable and reliable jsut a little harder to use for multimedia
I would also look into SQL commands as well once you have a good handle of how a DBMS works.
