Date of Windows installation

The best suggestion that I have is to look at the creation date of the C:\Windows folder and sub-folders.

Looking at My XP system, the date matches the default BIOS clock date.
However, a few of the folders were created afterwords, and match theapproximate time of installing Windows.

Remember to look at the date 'created' not modified or accessed.

Ok, I know of a tool that will work against a Win2K machine, and it will give you the Install date. Since you have a machine that was originally Win98, but was upgraded to Win2K, this should give you the Win2K upgraded date.
The tool is called PSINFO from Sysinternals.
Go here to get the tool:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/psinfo.shtml
(please remove any spaces)

Run this tool on your Win2K machine, and you will get output like the following:

c:> psinfo

PsInfo v1.33 - local and remote system information viewer

Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

System information for \\DEVELOPMENT:

IE version: 6.0000

This tool works for Win NT/2K/XP machines.

hope this helps

Joseph Moore has a good tool for you.
System Internals puts out a lot of good stuff.

I had looked in the registry before posting my previous answer, and did not find the information where I thought it would be.

For XP, the key is at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WBEM\CIMOM

And

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

However, this one is encrypted.

Hope this helps.
