DC Promo

By caryers ·
Can a Win2k3 Windows server be submitted into a NT 4.0 domain as a stand alone server and then be upgraded to a Domain Controller in the NT 4.0 domain by using DC Promo? I am trying to determine the best way to upgrade my WinNT 4.0 domain since I do not want to use the ADMT or perform an inplace upgrade on the PDC.

Thanks in advance...

No, that won't work.

You can install a new NT4 server as a BDC, and then promote it to PDC and then do an in place upgrade - if there is a reason why the PDC could not be upgraded.

Otherwise you have to create a new 2003 domain from scratch, create a trust between the new and old and then move everyone over to the new domain.
