DCPROMO failed

By rsears ·
I upgraded the first NT4 domain controller in my domain without any issues, its running AD and DNS seems to be working fine. I have other NT BDCs and W2K stand alone servers I would like to upgrade to W2K DCs. I ran DCPROMO on a standalone server, while running the active directory wizard I got an error that said.

The operation failed because:

Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain mydomain.com

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
The W2K domain DC seems to be working fine and there isn?t any indication there are any problems. The standalone is a member of the domain and is showing up in the DNS forward and reverse zones on the DC. DNS is set for dynamic updates. I have tried to run DCPROMO with, and without DNS running on the prospective DC candidate and have failed. Got any ideas? It seemed like it would be straightforward upgrade, only one domain, nothing fancy.

This behavior may be caused be the machine hitting one of your NT BDC and not the W2K DC.

Try taking the BDC's offline and then run DCPROMO again.

Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for but i hope it helps none the less.

GoodLuck!

I believe I ran into a simular problem on one of our DC during the upgrade and if I remember right it asks you two seperate times for a domain name. On that dc I had to put the old domain name (the name without the .com) in one of them and the new .com domain name in the other. But I can't remember for sure which order they go in. And I do believe I had to setup it as a secondary DNS server to copy over the dns information. Once I got it promoted I got rid of the DNS.

Hope this helps

I have tried to run DCPROMO with DNS running on the DC in Primary and AD integrated, with dynamic updates set to yes, no, and secured while the standalone has DNS in standard secondary neither have had any effect. I can successfully transfer zones from the DCs DNS.

Try adding the new DCs IP address to the primary DNS lookup of the server your trying to promote. HTH

Hey rsears I think I remember exactly what it was I did to get around this! I had to logon to the server I was upgrading with the exact domain user account that the dns server was logged on as.

How can I log onto the system with the Local System Account that DNS is using?

What do you mean, Log into the domain with the same user account that the dns server was logged on with. So if you logged on the dns server as rsears and domain "yourdomain" then log on the same way to the computer that you are trying to upgrade.

Okay, I guess I misunderstood what you were telling me, I thought you meant to log on interactively at the machine as the system account DNS uses, which I do not have a clue how to do. If that is possible and you know how to do it, share. You do mean to use the same domain account on both machines, my admin account; I believe I have done that and it had no effect. Considering that I have unrestricted access to all domain resources and I am a domain administrator, you would think that the current DC would not need to be logged on at all for me to successfully run DCPROMO on the candidate computer. This is puzzling the **** out of me. Oh yea, I just want you to know that I am very appreciative of your willingness to try helping me with this - 500 points.
