Death of WIN9x

By genethomas ·
It would seem necessary to kill win9x at this time as VISTA is near birth.

I will stick it out with my god awful Me until VISTA is mature.

SKIP XP.

I'd stick with ME regardless

by Deadly Ernest In reply to Death of WIN9x

Win XP has gotten buggier and buggier with each new 'security' assurance update that MS have issued - WGA being the worst. And they have already indicated that all these 'features' (and I use that word, theirs, extremely lossely) are integral to Vista.

Stay with ME or go to Linux is my recommendation - I just dumperd my legal copy of XP - needed to revalidate it everytime I updated, very annoying - and moved to SimplyMEPIS. Only noticable difference is improved performance.

Where can I get?

Agree, I happen to like 98SE, but nothing lives forever. Where could I find a copy of Simply MEPIS? It sounds interesting, I'd like to check it out.

www.mepis.org you can download or buy it

I tried SimplyMEPIS 3.04 from the Linux Format magazine cover disk and liked it so much I went and bought a copy of SimplyMEPIS 6 - cant donwload discs on my ISP - service to slow 28 to 37 kbps dial up.

Since January I have tried Fedora Core 4 & 5, Free Mandriva 2006, Mandrake 10, Debian Sarge, Ubuntu Breazey Badger, FreeBeOS and several others - I found SimplyMEPIS to be the best to suit my needs. It's a Debian based Linux that can also use Ubuntu packages

Windows ME

Hi Ernie

You and myself must be the only two people in the universe who have had a happy experience with ME. Everyone else says it is a disaster and the worst Windows ever, yet I have had it running on a machine for four years without ANY problems -- not even Blue Screens. The only minor quirk is that very occasionally it does not shut down fully.

I like the layout of the Program Menu which allows you to view ALL programs if you wish. 98 drives me batty having to scroll down to find the program I want.

ME is OK if you don't push its capabilities, but

by Deadly Ernest In reply to Windows ME

I really prefer Win 2K Pro or Win XP Pro SP1 to ME. However, if that's what you have, then stay with it as Win XP SP2 is buggy as **** and Vista is likely to be worse.

The only way Win XP SP2 works properly is if you have a borad band and don't mind it talking to MS all the time as the WGA misbehaves if you don't run autoupdates - which I cant, don't have the bandwidth to allow that.

Win XP SP2

by jardinier In reply to ME is OK if you don't pus ...

After having read about compatibility problems with SP2 and other software, I didn't take any chances and did a clean install of SP2 with only the XP OS installed.

Since then I have been able to install software designed for 95 and even 3.1
