Debug error- 16 bit system timout?

By kcmeister ·
User has a PIII, 667mhz, Intel 815 motherboard, 256mb ram, running Windows 2000 Pro, Office 2000 Pro products, except Access, which is Access 97.
When opening up sheets in excel, and sometimes word recieves error message: 16 bit system timeout. debug error. Have uninstalled and reinstalled operating system and office products. All hardware appears functional. Error follows the user, new computer recieving same error as previous computer user was using. Please! Somebody help me pinpoint the error. I need to verify that this is a software error only and if possible fix it asap.
Thank you in advance!

Debug error- 16 bit system timout?

Sounds like you have one to the extremes to solve this problem. First off, I am not to sure that it is any kind of hardware problem you may be having with the problems you are having. A 16 bit system timeout error sounds more like an environment error to me. How many other Users machines have you tried opening the file on? Besides this one particular user who obviously needs this file? If you attempt to open the file on many distinct Office installations, you can start to rule out the possibility of either the File itself has Problems, or No Office installations company wide are going to open this file without a patch, service pack, or other manual modification. Process of elimination is your best bet. Good Luck!

I agree that this is software, but I need definitive proof that it is. Any documented sources? I think the user is intentionally trying to crash machine. I need to somehow verify whether it is the file or the user that is causing the issue.
