Dedicated Server basics - I'm a newb to it all lol

By shadow1 ·
Here's the low down of my discussion/question...
Me and some friends want to run a dedicated sever for online games, such as counterstrike etc, and what we would like to know:
Whats the best 'deddy' OS?
How much (in GBP) does it cost to maintain a server?
What upload speed would we need to have a good connection to our server?
What are the dedicated server basics such as how to run it, what we need to know etc.

you are talking the EXPENSIVE windows server.
you can't run the games on any os but windows, so you are sucking bucks from your wallet by running a game server.

secondly, you need more than one, if it is going to be publicly available, you need to have a minimum of 3 or 4 up and running at once, just in case one crashes.

and it's either a 4 year university course to learn the tricks of load balancing / server replication or equivalent experience in a professional environment.

Have a look at
http://www.counter-strike.com/
or
http://www.gameservers.com/

I am not recommending just suggesting a starting point.
