Default desktop icons stop functioning

By HBrown ·
Here is the problem, There are three Windows 2000 Servers, they have been running fine then one day wham the desktop icons when used report that the path is not found or some non sense like that. I am talking about the default icons like My Computer, Recycle bin etc.. This has happened to all three of these servers on seperate occasions. The start button still functions as do all other aspects of the server. There are user connections ect. everything is ok except these damn icons. If anyone hasany info that could help me resolve this that would be great. The only wayIhavefound to restore these is to reboot, Logging off and back on as another user does not help.

Thanks

Sorry that this may not answer your question, but it may help direct you.

I had a similar problem recently with a NT4.0 machine when I ran a certain WSH script (WSH 2.0 installed).

Now I know Win2000 has WSH installed by default, but maybe (and only maybe) it is related.

My desktop and Quick Launch toolbar icons all stopped working, saying something about path being incorrect.

If you're now using WSH and you can uninstall it (I'm unaware of the implications) you could see if this helps.

Good luck.

I saw this once on a NT server 4.0 running PCAW (older version). Using server manager, stopped the service and corrected the problem. If you are using PCAW there is an update out for W2k.
You can try the same theory, use server manager and stop services one by one (non-critical) and test after each one.

Good Luck!
