default domain GPO inaccessible

By NatCat ·
Hi All,
First I noticed I had no information in my security event logs

Secondly, when I tried to edit the default domain controller policy I recived the error message "Access denied.....details: system cannot find path specified"

In trouble shooting I've realised that
1. there is only one ploicy in the sysvol policy folder in all the DCs while there are at least 5 GPOs in AD
2. Apart from one event ID 1265, source NTDSKCC there are no problems with the DNS server. Actually there aren't any errors showing up in the DNS even log at all.

Is it possible for me to get back my default domain policy and default domain controller policy without using a backup ?
Is there anyway I can pinpoint when the GPO objects in sysvol were deleted ?

Hi.

I have had this exact problem before on a clients site. There were some versions of the Nimda virus which caused this problem as one of its many damaging consequences. The only way to fix this is to log a call with Microsoft Support Services in your country, as I have obtained a utility from them which they wrote which recreates these Group policies.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards.
