Default Keyboard layout and Printers

By Whatme? ·
What can I do to set a default keyboard layout of US English and a default Printer and possibly default Internet settings for all new users. When I create one now they get a French layout, no Printer and have to setup their Internet for each new computer they log onto. (Roaming Profiles)

1. Check your regional settings in the control panel and make sure you set the one you want as default (administrator rights needed). You will need a reboot after this.

2. Create the default settings that you want under a user profile then:
Right click on My computer, Select the user profiles tab and copy that profile to the defaults users c:\winnt\profiles\Default User. Set the access rights for the profile to Everyone or Authenticated users. You can set up a complete environment that way and all new users on that machine will receive it.

3. If you want the profiles to be roaming then make sure that you have defined a home directory in the Profile section of User Manager.

When you install NT you chose the keyboard layout and it's US English as a default. I know because I allways have to change it to French. This is the best place to change the setting for the computer as changing later only changes it in the profile so not changed at log in. This can cause probs with passwords. For adding a default printer I would reccomend KB article Q252388. It's a fiddley process involving hacking the registry but it worked perfectly for me.
On last note in reference to previous answer if using roaming profiles you could set one default profile up on your PDC.

P.S. what do you mean set up there internet?

Thank you. It worked ... so far.
Internet. I meant, when NEW users log in to a different computer they have to go through the process of setting up an Internet account... Are you networked, have you already have a connection, etc. same with Printers etc. Here again, I probably can do this through registry.. I just don't know where?
Any ideas... email me at: mervt@arctic.ca

Thanks
Merv
