OpenSource vs THE "OTHER"

by Dedah In reply to Defazenos

Today i was installing and ADSL connection from my ISP and I had two choices to make over the operation system I had to use for the proxy server:

1. Linux Redhat 8.0
2. Microsoft 2003 Server

I dont know how to configure a firewall in Microsofts' O/S because it is already configured by the Microsoft team.

Some geeks say that Linux is a cumbersome O/S to configure but let me point out that OpenSource software has been made so easy to use with introduction of GUI based daemons. If anybody will think of setting up their own rules in a firewall that is Linux-based, try this, FireStarter.

What it does is that it simply identifies the interface that is connected to the internet (eth0) and the private interface (eth1). The it allows you to configure the allowed IPs, blocked ports and open ports. Once this has been setup all you need to do is to restart the firewall and bingo you are in the game.
