      Try these 2 together

      pagedfrg.exe

      http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

Run it and see how defragmented it is. Let it run on next boot.

      NTREGOPT

      http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ntregopt.html

The program works by recreating each registry hive “from scratch”,
thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously
      modified or deleted keys.

Note that the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in
any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive
(as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does). The optimization
done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the
      minimum size possible.

      Here’s a new one:

It’s from Auslogics and it’s free:
      http://tinyurl.com/2nq63r

I’ve used several over the years and I’ve been testing this one for the past few weeks. So far, it has performed as advertised – quick, easy and thorough without issues.

My favorite reg defrager is the one that comes with Advanced System Optimizer from Systweak. But it isn’t free.

True Blue’s recommends are very valid and good ones as well (as usual).

for the comment and the link. I will be passing that one on to my father-in-law, it will be easier for him to use to instruct his advanced students. We volunteer for the University of the Third Age. In other words we teach Old Farts how to use a PC.

Meanwhile, at the quality end of the market (no offence boys) …

You could do worse than trying out some free demos of ‘better’ paid-for products.

      For disk defrag, try this:

      http://tinyurl.com/6jjtnw

For registry correction and defrag, try this:

      http://tinyurl.com/66b7hh

It is not necessarily so that paid-for utilities are any better than many of the free ones, but if you can try for free, the ones that I have bought, there’s no reason not to have a go. 🙂
