Locked

Defrag

By downon ·
I have a Win98se PC

It has a 30g HD that has a bad sector BUT

when I try to defrag the HD, it locks up the PC

I try in dos mode and it locks up as well

I don't want to buy a new HD so is there any software to correct this issue?

Once you find the first bad sector on your drive others are sure to follow. Replace the drive now while you still have access to your data.

Run Scandisk and do a complete scan disk. It will lock out bad sectors from future use, then you may do a defrag.

Bad sectors does not always mean a bad drive, just corrupt files / bad sectors.

If there are numerous bad sectors, a format will take care of that. If more continue to arise, then you have a drive issue where you will need to back up your data and replace the drive.

Backup your data and do the following.

Do a HD diagnostic test. This utility program is free and brand specific (Power max for Maxtor or Quantum, Seatools for Seagate, DFT for IBM, DLG for WD, and so on). You can download it from the manufacturer?s website.

If the result shows that the bad sectors can be repaired, go ahead. All data or file in those sectors will be lost and the HD may be O.K. for further use. If it cannot be repaired, you should replace it. A new 40GB HD can be had under $60.

I'm using Win98 SE and here is a little program I've found that eliminated all my lock-up problems and does an excellent scandisk and defrag job. Read the "readme" file. Disconnect your modem (if needed) before you run it because it shuts everything down, including your firewall before it runs.
