Defrag in Windows 2000

By hjs ·
I am having trouble scheduling defrag to run in Windows 2000. I have set it to run once a week but it errors and wil not run. System is PII 300 192 meg, Windows 2000 Pro and two 20.4 GB HD's.

There could be corruption with the Hard drive. Do a ckdsk on the drive letter. Do not forget the F. ex. chkdsk c: /f

The defrag that comes with Windows 2000 does not have scheduling capabilities. Diskeeper does have an upgrade to allow for scheduling the defrag. Although the version of Diskeeper that comes with Windows 2000 will suffice; you will want to look at upgrading for scheduled defrags. Diskeeper is the most well known defrag utility (www.diskeeper.com), but I have seen and used better technology from O&O Software (www.oo-software.com). Other things to note: Diskeeper did not support Win2K until version 5.0. If you are using an earlier version that may be a reason as well.
