Defrag problem WinXP

In some of my WinXP instalations defrag does not
work (both gui and cmd). From the cmd version I
get the error text “Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine”. The problem exist both
in WinXP and WinXPsp1.
Any one got a clue ?
