When I run defrag, it gets to approximately 30% done then says that the drive contents have changed. Are there any programs or utilities available to track down what is changing the main drive in my computer? Thanks in advance for any help....Lyle.

There are a few possibilities that may be causing your problem. Among them are Virus scanners, Screen savers, Auto-saving applications, and Logging utilities. All of these types of programs occasionally write to your HDD. I suggest that you disable any of these programs you are using while you run defrag.
The drive contents can change when virus scanner is running in background during defrag, disable the virus scan while defragging Disable the screen saver Open the Control Panel,double-click on Power Management and then click on properties, increase the time limit,so that you have time to complete the defrag, return when finished No specific utilities that will track the procees,so that you will know what is changing during this process
The previous answers a correct but don't solve the problem completely. Here's what ya do! Bring up system in safe-mode (hold down the control key while starting the computer, then choose option 3). Then run scandisk and defrag. It should alwaysbe done this way or you'll have too many background processes running and defrag won't complete (and scandisk will not work correctly either). Try it, let me know.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
