Defrag/registry problems

I defraged my win 98se machine. When restarted, a screen comes up with something like “there is problem with the registry, windows will fix…press enter to restart machine. after this happens a couple of times windows starts but the defrag has hasgone back to “it has been 220 days since last defrag”
Can u help.
