defrag restart

By DonKenAll ·
I've been remiss in defragging my drive. Now when I start defrag, it gets to 10%, then stops with the message, "Drive's contents changed: restarting ..." It does this over and over. What's up?

defrag restart

Generally this is caused by anti-virus software, a screen saver, or something else running in the background. Close everything you can down and disable the screen saver, etc. If the problem persists try clean booting or booting to safe mode to defrag.

Here is MS' article on this issue:

Hope this helps!

Also you'll need to stop any programs that are setup to check for updates, such as Realplayer, Windows Mediaplayer, you may have Windows set to check for updates or your antivirus. You only need to go into these programs settings & uncheck any update boxes.

Check in your control panel under scheduled tasks & disable anything that doesn't have a red X showing.

Any program setup to do updates or scheduled tasks write to the hard drive causing defrag or scandisk to stop & start over.

Not really sure why all the efforts towards shutting things down tend to be recommended when it is just so much simpler to boot into safe mode and run the program.

Safe mode does give you, in general, the least amount of things started outside ofjust running it in DOS. And it is so easy to get there.

Now the other thing that hasn't been mentioned but is sometimes set on defrag is the rearrange to make programs run faster. I have never found this to be of any value. Start>Programs>System Tools>Defrag>settings - uncheck the rearrange and make sure bottom button is "each time I run this program". That eliminates a big hassle factor.

Now if you can't get through scandisk from Safe Mode then your alternative is to just boot to Command prompt and run it there.

scandisk /? gives you the modifier info.

If you need help getting to Safe mode post what OS your using and will get back to you.

Hope that helps.
