Defrag Time for 20gb HD?

By capri ·
My problem began when I tried to install Corel's WP Suite 8. I keep getting error message that there is insufficient disk space. I have 8.31gb free space in a 20gb HD; the program requires 50mb free. I then decided to defrag my HD--which brings me to my question. How long should this defrag operation take? It has been running continuously for the past 12 hours and says it is only 5% complete. I am running Win98 on a system (500mhz/256mb RAM). Should I give up or just use more patience?

The Win98 defrag program will restart if anything on the hard disk changes, which is probably why it is taking so long. Try defragging in safe mode - there won't be as many processes running in the background to interfere witht he defrag.

Just a note: defrag optimises your hard disk, but it won't free up any disk space - you'll need to run disk cleanup or uninstall any unused programs. Otherwise, it might be time to invest in a larger hard disk.

You can kill it. I shouldn't take that long unless there is another problem. Read this:

If I were you I'd grab the Hard Drive diagnostic utility from your hard drive mfg. website. It sounds like there is a problem with your drive or the OS's handling of the swap file. I've got my money on the hard drive. Running the diagnostic utility will tell you if the hard drive is defective.

Good luck.

since all OS's running multiple apps on startup, u should run task manager, and "end task" all apps that are running, including any codecs, virus checkers i mean anything thats a program. then u disable ur powersaving features under display settings aswell as ur screensaver. Whenever ur OS detects any interference while reading ur drive just b 4 actually starting DEFRAG, it will continuesly restart the DEFRAG COMMAND. Try and c if this works.
