Defrag window 2000 no enough free space

By California Dead Head ·
I am running a non-domain controller w2000 server. When I try to run defrag on the 5 GB system partition that has 1GB free space (25%) it tells me there is 25% free space 0% of which is usable by disk defragmenter. Delete some files and try again. I delete some files and it says there is 25% free 1% is which is usable by disk defragmenter??? Any thoughts. Be specific I am not to bright.

You probably should empty your trash can. Also if you have i.e Norton installed there will be a 'Norton Protected Recycle Bin' to empty.

Hope this helps

I'm fairly sure that the defrag utility that ships with win2k for free requires contiguous free space. It may be seeing that 25% as being taken by your pagefile, trashcan, or scattered file fragments.

The commercial version, Diskkeeper Server, tends to be a bit more flexible. It also seems to deal with defrags while users are connected a bit better (the free version sucks almost 100% CPU, and restarts every time something changes, drives me up the wall!)
