Defragging Me machine

I have booted an ME machine up in the Safe Mode. Ctrl-Alt-Del shows only Systray and Explorer running. Machine will not complete defrag. Left on for 24 hours. Keeps restarting. What is disturbing the drive? Not connected to network or Internet. thanks
