Defraging of Sequel 2000 Database

By srippey ·
Is there a way to specifically defrag a sequel 2000 database, and is this recommended? We have several large databases, and I don't think that regular windows 2000 server defrag would touch the database. We are experiencing some performance lag, and I would like to rule this out. Any nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you can shut down, run DBCC DBREINDEX on your tables. If not, run DBCC INDEXDEFRAG.

You are right, fragmentation occurs on both the database and the physical files. No amount of defrag (Windows System tool) would help on a database fragmentation.

The comment above is right. Try DBCC DBREINDEX or better, DBCC INDEXDEFRAG to re-arrange (defragment) database indexes. There are a lot of helpful topics about this in many sites, though SQL books online and msdn do provide adequate info.

Dont forget to backup before attempting defrag on your DB. Good luck!
