Could you give some more details of your e-mail system? If it's web-based (i.e., you're using a browser to access Yahoo, Hotmail, Excite, or some other freemail) then those downloaded stuff are in the Temporary Internet Files system folders. To delete these, select "Internet Options..." in the "Tools" menu, click the "Delete Files..." button of the "Temporary Internet files" box in the "General" folder tab.

If you're using some other e-mail system (Outlook, Lotus, etc.) then you'll have to provide more details.

In many cases the thumbnails are temporary creations made by the system to help you assist in identifying the right image. Usually deleting the image will mean that no thumbnailf for that will appear when you refresh the screen or next time you open it.
