Deleted RAID 1 Volume – How to Recover

by paulca . Updated 17 years, 3 months ago

2 500GB drives in a hardware RAID 1 array. 2 volumes. One volume (Data)is gone.

I’ve run several software data recovery apps, but nothing “sees” the missing volume. Offers to restore data only from the 1st. volume.

Originally, Volume 1 was OS and Apps – 160GB.
Volume 2 was Data, 340GB.

What happened to the missing volume? I’m not sure, but I am guessing it’s one of the following.

1. Accidentally deleted while thinking I was deleting a different volume. I don’t think this is the case, because I belive the affected drives were disconnect at that time, but not sure.

2. Motherboard only supported 4 volumes total. Had 3 volumes (added 2 new drives) with original array with 2 volumes disconnected. Connected original 2 bringing total to 5 volumes. 5 volumes not supported, something had to go???

I am considering recreating the missing volume, but if I do that, will the data (if it is still there)be over written?

At this point I don’t mind having to “recover” the data.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Paul
