Deleting a file on a windows 2000 server

Here is the scenario: I have a windows 2000 client, I have a mapped drive to a server on an NT domain. I delete a file, the file is not in my local recycle bin, or on the servers. Where did it go?
Do I have to restore from backup? Is there a turf directory on the server? Any help on this would be appreciated.
