Deleting computer Accounts

By bentgellerich ·
I would like to delete some old computer accounts under NT 4.0. How do I know a particular account has not been used in a while. I have a few hundred accounts to go through and not all computers a logged on all the time, so I don't want to inadvertently delete an active account.

What you should do is go through them and deactivate them for a couple of weeks first. If there aren't any issues, delete them.

It is not possible to disable computer accounts under NT 4.0.

What will happen to the user when they try to log on using a computer that has been temporarly deactivated?

I don't want to inconvenience anyone.

It won't let them in, it would say account deactivated or something along those lines.

NT Resource Kit has few utilities that gives use statistics regarding logons and last logon. For, example usrstat.exe but try disabling the account for a period of time rather deleting in one go.

NTUSER.EXE from pedestalsoftware.com can give you information on computer accounts. Here's a command-line that will dump all expired accounts using that utility (make sure you write it all on one line):

for /f %i in ('ntuser show MYDOMAIN\*$') do@(ntuser show MYDOMAIN\%i | find "PASSWORD_EXPIRED"|find /i "True" >nul) && echo %i

Easier command-line:

ntuser -s MYPDC show MYDOMAIN\*$ -where "password_expired==1"
