Deleting More Than 1 File In Xp Search

By mteal ·
I used the XP search utility to locate some remnant files on my system which I then attempted to delete by selecting all of same and then clicking on the delete button in the toolbar but rather than deleting all selected files I received the following error message:

"Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

Interestingly, deletion works as expected when focusing on one file at a time but if I attempt to delete even two files selected together I receive the error message above. I would very much prefer to quickly batch delete the files rather than delete them one at a time but I am at a complete loss to do so.

These are files (eg temporary internet files) that I have permissions to and I've made sure IE is closed etc. As I say I can delete the files one at a time, just not all at once in the search window. If I use Windows Explorer I can delete the files all at once.

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Usually the above error message appears when the file has already been deleted.

Is it that you are trying to delete files that you think are still there, but they have already been deleted?

The "Search" screen does not usually "refresh" like windows explorer does (especially if you let the search completely finish before deleting anything). You'd have to issue your search again to see the files disappear; you'd get the above message if the file was already deleted. You should be able to control-A (select all files in your serahc window) and delete them all.

sound like you are deleting the temporary internet files, the system treats them as special system files and the best way to delete them is from the borwser. If using MSIE open the browser, select Tools >> Internet Options and it should open at the General Tab, click the button that says 'Delete Files' in the middle of the pop up window.

Thanks for that. Strangely I was able to delete multiple temporary files through Windows Explorer, not the search window. I tried a test with some simple text files (created in the same folder as the temp files) and deleted them fine.
