Dell Dimension 8400 crash – no Windows CD – no boot disk

My Dell Dimension 8400 with Windows XP was trying to run Word, when an error box appeared saying it couldn’t find Word. When I rebooted, the screen stayed black, and displayed an error message “No boot device available ? Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility.”

After powering down, the black screen says “A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.” When I do, that’s the only message that appears.

I don’t remember receiving Windows Installation CD’s from Dell, and I did not make a bootdisk. How can I bring my machine back to life, and how do I know if I’ve lost all my files on the hard drive? Thanks.
